About the event
Sankranti is a festival of sharing—of food, time, stories, and blessings.
This workshop is designed as a gentle, hands-on space where children, parents, and grandparents create together, using simple materials and familiar traditions.
Over one relaxed morning, participants will make:
A paper toran to take home and hang
A paper rangoli inspired by Sankranti patterns
A decorated yellu bella gift box, filled and ready to share
A recycled cloth kite keychain as a playful keepsake
No prior art experience needed.
Everything is guided, slow, and accessible.
Why an Intergenerational Workshop?
Most children today experience festivals as events to attend, not rituals to participate in.
Most elders carry memories of festivals that no longer have space to unfold.
This workshop creates that space.
Children bring curiosity.
Elders bring memory.
Adults bring continuity.
The crafts are simple by design, so the real making happens between people, not just on paper.
What We’ll Be Making
Paper Toran
A collaborative decorative garland inspired by traditional festival entrances.
Paper Rangoli
Mess-free rangoli using colour, symmetry, and pattern—designed for tables and walls.
Yellu Bella Gift Box
A decorated box filled with the traditional sesame–jaggery mix, with a short story shared about its meaning.
Recycled Cloth Kite Keychain
A small, joyful Sankranti symbol made from fabric scraps.
All materials are provided.
About the Facilitator
This workshop is facilitated by Aparajitha Vaasudev, an illustrator, designer, and educator with over a decade of experience working at the intersection of art, culture, and community.
Her practice spans:
Children’s book illustration rooted in Indian mythology and traditions
Community workshops across ages
Design and storytelling projects with cultural and social organisations
She designs workshops the way she approaches art:
thoughtfully, accessibly, and with deep respect for lived experience.
Her work includes illustrating My First Hanuman Chalisa and My First Prayer to Lord Ram, published by Adidev Press, where she focuses on making tradition feel welcoming, visual, and alive for children and elders alike.
This is not a performance-based art class.
It is a shared making space.
Languages spoken: English (primary), with support in Kannada, Tamil, and Hindi as needed.
